Madhuri Dixit’s New Film Sparks Debate
The film explores the harsh reality that women are often subjected to suspicion, criticism, and character judgment simply because of their gender. Through a blend of satire and emotional storytelling, the movie challenges deeply rooted social attitudes and exposes the double standards that continue to shape perceptions of women.
Its title carries multiple meanings. On one hand, it references a common abusive phrase frequently used in everyday language. On the other, it echoes the familiar expression often invoked when discussing respect for women: “Don’t you have a mother or sister at home?” The film questions whether women should only be valued through their relationships with others or recognized as individuals with their own identities.
Madhuri Dixit plays Rekha, a widowed woman who is unfairly labeled a “witch” by her community simply because she refuses to conform to traditional expectations after her husband’s death. Her confidence, smile, and choice of clothing make her a target of gossip and judgment, while men around her openly objectify and insult her.
The story also follows Rekha’s daughters, Sushma and Jiya, who grow up burdened by societal prejudice and their own doubts about their mother. Through humor and sharp social commentary, the film highlights how men’s actions are often overlooked while women are harshly scrutinized for even the smallest perceived mistakes.
