Karachi holds main 9th Muharram procession under tight security
The main 9th Muharram procession in Karachi commenced on Thursday afternoon from Nishtar Park, following a mourning congregation addressed by prominent religious scholar Allama Shehanshah Hussain Naqvi, as authorities implemented extensive security measures across the city.
The central Majlis-e-Aza began at 10:00 a.m. at Nishtar Park, where Allama Naqvi addressed thousands of participants . The main procession, led by Pak Haidari Scouts, set off at 1:00 p.m. along its traditional route, passing through Shah Nawaz Bhutto Road, M.A. Jinnah Road, and Numaish Chowrangi .
Mourners offered Zuhrain prayers in front of Imambargah Ali Raza on M.A. Jinnah Road before the procession continued along its customary path to conclude at Hussainia Iranian Imambargah in Kharadar .
According to a Karachi Police spokesperson, more than 5,000 police officers and personnel have been deployed along the procession route, with Rangers personnel also assisting in maintaining law and order .
Authorities have sealed streets and lanes connected to the procession route with containers, while markets and shops along the route remain closed for three days as part of the security plan . Trained security personnel equipped with binoculars and modern weapons have been stationed on high-rise buildings overlooking the route, and the Bomb Disposal Squad conducted thorough sweeps before the route was handed over to procession organisers .
Mobile phone services in sensitive areas around Nishtar Park and the procession route have been partially suspended as a precautionary measure, according to security officials .
The traffic police have implemented a comprehensive diversion plan, with M.A. Jinnah Road closed from Guru Mandir to Tower and alternative routes arranged for commuters across the city . Authorities have urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel during procession hours and cooperate with security personnel to ensure a peaceful observance .
The 9th of Muharram is observed across Pakistan with religious solemnity, commemorating the sacrifices of Imam Hussain and his companions in the tragedy of Karbala, leading up to Youm-e-Ashura on the 10th of Muharram.
