Man Exhumes Sister’s Remains to Prove Death for Bank Withdrawal in Odisha
According to local media reports, the incident took place in the Keonjhar district of Odisha. The man, identified as Jitu Munda, had been trying for days to access funds amounting to ₹19,300 (approximately $230) from his late sister’s bank account. His sister had passed away two months earlier.
Despite repeatedly informing bank officials of her death, his requests were allegedly denied. Authorities insisted that the account holder must be physically present to sign the withdrawal documents.
In a desperate attempt to prove his claim, Jitu reportedly dug up his sister’s grave and brought her remains to the bank. The incident caused shock among staff and bystanders.
Police later intervened, persuaded him to leave the premises, and arranged for the respectful reburial of the remains. Authorities have since launched an investigation and are working to simplify the legal process so he can access the funds.
The viral video of the incident has sparked widespread debate on social media, with many expressing outrage over bureaucratic insensitivity, while others questioned procedural lapses.
