Iran Talks to Be Held via Phone, Trump
Speaking to journalists at the White House during a meeting with astronauts selected for Artemis II, Trump emphasized that while he values face-to-face diplomacy, it is no longer practical to undertake lengthy and costly travel for every round of discussions.
He explained that each trip can involve up to 18 hours of travel, only to sometimes discover upon arrival that newly presented documents or proposals are not workable. “I prefer direct meetings, but such extensive travel for discussions that may not yield results is inefficient,” he stated.
Responding to another question, Trump expressed cautious optimism about progress in talks, saying that Iran has made some advancements. However, he added that the key question remains whether Iran is willing to go as far as the United States expects in reaching an agreement.
Trump reiterated that no deal would be possible without firm guarantees that Iran does not possess nuclear weapons, stressing that this remains a non-negotiable condition for any future agreement.
