PDMA Issues Glacial Lake Outburst Flood Alert for Upper Districts Amid Rising Temperatures
According to PDMA, the ongoing heatwave has increased the risk of rapid glacier melting, raising concerns about glacial lake bursts, flash floods, and landslides in vulnerable mountainous regions.
District administrations in Upper and Lower Chitral, Swat, Upper Dir, Kohistan, and Mansehra have been directed to take precautionary measures to prevent potential damage and loss of life.
Authorities have also instructed local administrations in glacier-sensitive areas to remain on high alert and ensure continuous monitoring of vulnerable locations.
PDMA stated that rescue agencies, machinery, and emergency response teams have been ordered to remain fully prepared for any emergency situation.
Instructions have also been issued to timely inform at-risk populations and relocate them to safer areas if necessary.
The disaster management authority has advised tourists to avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from rivers, streams, and glacial regions during this period.
The public has also been urged to avoid rain-fed streams and fast-flowing water channels during rainfall.
PDMA spokesperson said that in case of any emergency, citizens should immediately contact the PDMA helpline 1700.
